1. Neither the king nor the rook must have moved.
2. The king cannot be in check, nor move through check, nor land in check. The rook can be under threat of attack though.
3. It's okay if the king has been checked, as long as he never moved.
4. All the pieces between the rook and the king must be out of the way.
5. The king moves two spaces, either short side or long side (towards the queens side), and the rook jumps over the king to the adjacent square.
6. It's more difficult to defend castling long (or queen) side.
