I bought a cheap one and I bought a more expensive one. They are both great. I've never seen a flimsy machete. They both came with covers which makes them a bit safer. I have a yardman that took down a damaged tree with a machete as fast as a person with a chain saw could have. He uses it for all trimming and it is remarkable to see the skill he has with it.

You don't want the blade to be too flexible. It should be ridged. The blade should run the whole length of the machete, through the handle. It should be of carbon steel. Don't buy any stainless steel oriental $5 crap.

I have found most machetes flimsy compared to Filipino bolos. They take more abuse and can cut thru 2 1/2" trees in one swing look here style # 3 , http://www.reflectionsofasia.com/bolo.htm

A good stiff blade with a upturned round point is about as good as you can get. The good ones are a little pricy if you can find them localy. But overstock.com has em pretty cheap.
