Indeed many are Greek but not exclusively so. any country surrounded by sea and dependant on the sea for its existence breeds ship ownership. Norway, japan, and even Korea have substantial merchant marine fleets and shipping magnates as well. Certainly Greece or rather Greek owned ships have a commanding lead in gross tonnage, so tradition has something to do with it.Also the love for life and exuberance of the Greeks makes the shipping people more visible. Look at the map of Greece in the middle of the Med.. one important reason already.
Greeks are natural born businessmen; they take any/every opportunity to urn, live and let live.
Also Greeks invented and worked out the system to have several/different profit-centers within there shipping industry, and even on the Greek ships; making it attracttive business for both investors and staff/sailors.

Many of them are Norwegian - for the same reason. Huge coastline for the land area, huge historical dependence on the sea. People are just into ships in these places.
