I recieved a W2 form in the mail for a company i have never heard of in Kansas. I live in Colorado and never worked in Kansas or any company out of Kansas.

What do I do?
Is this a goverment issue or somthing?
My credit report looks okay, I don't think my Identity was stolen.
Why would anyone use my social security number to work?
Should I combine the info for taxes with the W2 from my work and this place I never worked?
Is there a special way to combine/file taxes for two W2's?
What happens if I only use the W2 for where I have worked? will I be audited?

Its my first year to do taxes so I need some advice. Thanks.

Write, not call, the company issuing the W-2. Tell them that you never worked for them, that you live in Colorado and that the W-2 issued to you at your address in Colorado was incorrect and that you want a new corrected W-2 issued showing that you had zero income from them. If they do not comply, assume that they are complicit in the fraud (it happens--especially if they are hiring undocumented illegal aliens). In that case, you will have to write to the Internal Revenue Service, taxpayer advocate. Enclose the incorrect W-2, your correct W-2s, your correct address and a copy of your drivers license along with a letter from your employer saying that you worked full time in Colorado during the year in issue.
The same thing happened to me when I was working in an office on the East Coast and got a notice from the IRS that I had not reported my earnings in Salinas, Calif from agricultural work. I got my department head to sign a letter I wrote for him saying that I had been employed full time in Mass during the year in question as evidenced by the W-2 issued by my actual employer. I never heard about that phony W-2 again.

Contact the person on the W2 and find out why they issued it in the first place. Do not start an unecessary fire drill.

You should be able to find out what the problem is with a phone call. If there is something fishy going on, then take action.

Possible scenarios...the company uses a 3rd party vendor to issue the W2's and they input the wrong SSN and they are matching it against a national database of addresses.

You could be working for a company that does business under another name with headquarters in Kansas and they are in charge of issuing your W2.

I suggest calling first.

it could be a miss print but i would call the company where it's from, or go to you local police and report it. you probably will run into problems when doing you taxes, so i would report it and go from there. Wow hopefully no one has stolen your identity, best of luck to you!!!

If your identity was not stolen as the other answerers suggested, you can ignore the W-2. You do not need to tell the IRS. It increases your chance of being audited, however.
