I have no desire to have children, yet I can see from a pragmatic viewpoint that it might be sensible to have children so there is someone to protect my interests when I am old and frail.
However from an ethical point of view I think that is a bad reason, so I won't.

But I wonder whether this is the case with many other men. Do most of them who want kids have them because they want the kids (the fun of bringing them up, playing with them etc), or are there a significant minority or even majority of them who only want them to look after them when they are old, but don't have my moral objection to this?

Following on from this, why do I, and I think many other young men these days not want to have children, when people of an earlier generation 30, 50 years ago were much more interested. Is it because there is so much more to do these days, like playing computer games etc that the appeal of children wanes into insignificance?

Yes I'm single and with no girlfriend.

I applaud you for not having any if you don't really want them. Congrats.....A man with some sense for a change. I get bored reading so many questions from a lot of others on here asking whether they may be pregnant, what to do if they are, why am I late, etc. Shoulda thought of that before you opened them legs or zippers.
You may change your mind later, maybe not. BUT have them ONLY if you want them. It would not be fair to the child to be born just to take care of you when you get decrepid or to carry on your name. I'm sure it is elsewhere in the world being carried on by someone. Some don't want the responsibility of a child for 18(or more) yrs. There are birth defects to consider too.(Rare, but they do occur)
back in the day, they didn't have as much birth control as they do today. Abstinence was about it and that ain't gonn happen too often. Body takes over and mind shuts down....ALWAYS.

I am single with no girlfriend as well. At least a steady girlfriend.
Maybe one day I will want Children, but for now I am happy enough to be Uncle to my mates children. They get the headaches, a horrid job to support them, and dirty diapers while I get my uni education.
I plan to do like C.S. Lewis. Wait until I am 55, marry a woman with a couple of delightful children, and be the most kind and decent parent I can. Okay, well maybe I won't be 55! But I have to have my heart pierced with Cupid's arrow first!

I just feel that children have no redeeming qualities, are a burden financially, and are too time consuming. I have no desire to leave behind a 'legacy' or whatever. I plan to be financially stable enough to afford my own private care when I'm unable to attend to myself. Some guys might want the 2 kids and white picket fences, but there's too much of the world out there to just spend it at home. Also, I don't have a large farm, so I don't need to breed labor.

At least you're intelligent enough to think about it & consider the effect it will have on you. Unfortunately that means that you are probably one of the people who should reproduce. I think men want children for the following reasons: they want to "prove" their manhood.....they want to have the family they wish they'd had.....they want to have the good family they had again.... and, always, religion. I'm a woman. I planned on 2, but my daughter was an IUD baby & came along before we were financially ready. I'm pro-choice, but that means having a choice. I chose to keep her. She's 28. It was the right decision for me, but not for everyone. (I only had one. I got my tubes tied after her.)

I don't want children because it would interfere with the lifestyle my wife and I want to live. Don't get me wrong, most kids are great, I just don't need to have any.

I don't need a little me, nor do I feel the need to carry on the family line, my sibs already have kids.

Besides, I like being the "weird" uncle.
