One has to remember, that no matter how stories, myths or legends you read, discuss or watch on the big screen, with reference to Merlin, he was a real person. But the name Merlin is more of a title than an individual’s particular name. It's relates back being a title for an Arch Druid.
Think of this in the same context of Caesar, there was only one Julius Caesar although after his passing many other Roman leaders adopted his name as a title. As for when he was born I am unsure through my books of reference but I would go along with Phoenix Starfire, his answer is quite good.
I hope this helps.

According to legend Myrddyn or Merlin as his name is often written, was born to a woman in a nunnery some time during the 5th or 6th century, in the small Briton town of Carmaethan (Spelling on the town name may not be accurate). Legend also suggests his mother was not a nun but a traveller from somewhere outside Briton. It is also written his father was not of this world, whatever that may mean.

there is not a certain time period that I know of. Although even though it's just a fictional novel, read the lost years of merlin series, it's just one author's take on the years before merlin came into play with arthurian legend

Merlin is actualy one of the few provable characters from Arthurian myth- there is far more evidence for him than there is for Arthur!!! There seems to have been 2 (maybe it was -as has been suggested - a title for chief druid) one born in the 5thC and one in the 6thC...

Since Merlin is a mythological being, he probably wasn't "born", but rather came to being by a magical trick...a magic power accidentally sneezed on some poor smuck! LOL :)
