The greatest tragedy was that it was a war between brothers, etc. CIVIL hardly, truly, accurately defines it. A triumph of sorts was that during that time A. Lincoln signed and delivered the Emancipation Proclamation which tragically got him murdered.

I doubt anyone serious about the study of the Civil War can attest to any triumphs. In any war there are never any "winners"

It was all a tragedy and a triumph. Both individually and collectively. The lasting legacy was that we went from being "These" United States to "The" United States.

Chances are that had it not been fully concluded and had been finished with a truce, we would have had to do it all again twenty years later.

There are a large number of books of speculative fiction by an author named Harry Turtledove, that deal in might ifs.

when i think of triumphs of the civil war i start with lincoln's ability to keep the union in the fight despite much criticism and outrage from the electorate of the north; he had very little support and had we changed presidents on a whim like we want to these days the union may have surrender long before the fight was over (it's very similiar to our conflict with terrorist if you ask me). i also think of the 20th maine regiment who held the line against a massive assault at little round top at gettsyburg against superior numbers and to the last round of ammunition. i also think of how grant took control as supreme commander of union forces and turn a perrenial loser of an army into an army who wasn't afraid of the great Robert E Lee (one of our country's greatest generals). lee had many great triumphs throughout the war like when he split his army at chancellorsville and crushed the union at fredricksburg, amoung others. then of course, i think the biggest triumph was simply of the north winning b/c had this Country split i wholeheartedly believe the world would not have met the great challenges of the 20th century without a unified America. of course, i am from the south and have a romantic association with Lee and his army so i in a strange way i get sad over his loss at Gettysburg and one of his few poor showings throughout that war. tradedies in this war are just too many to count but perhaps the biggest was the loss of life. if i'm not mistaken a 1/5 of the union population died in the civil war (not fighters the entire population) and i think a 1/3 of the south. those numbers may be wrong but the death toll was enormous.
