It depends If you give a kid a swat on the behind to startle him/her into compliance and as a last resort. No I do not think that is abuse.

But if you beat the kid and bruise him/her you've crossed the line. and you should get help.

Hitting normally means that a parent is either out of control, or has very little disciplinary skills.
If the hitting is the last resort, and the steps of: modeling, rewarding positive behavior, removing priveleges, attempting to discover the trigger, and otehr such systems have been tried, then possibly, this is acceptable.
Never out of anger!!! The Emotional Scars are FAR TOO GREAT.
Children will forget what they got in trouble for, but remember the way they were treated.
This is the same thing for adults, who tell a story in which there was high drama, but they can't remember what in the world the fight was about to begin with.
I left my mother at 11 years old for it, and I'm nothing but glad that I did.

Those that discipline their children do so because they love them. Parents who do not discipline their children show a complete lack of love for thier kids. It is hard to discipline a child, and train them up in the way they should go, but it is very rewarding. We've all seen spoiled brats, and it isn't a pretty sight. If you really love your child you will discipline them.

It's bad when you do it with rage not with love... 'cause the purpose of discipline is teach them OK? but I am not against it, 'cause my parents did it with me, and now I am grateful with them... but be extremely careful how are you doing it...

Yeah, it's the people who say, "Your children are SOOOOO well-behaved..." and in the very next breath say, "Why are you so hard on them???"
