Why would an interviewer ask what kind of car I drive? The position does not involve the use of my car for business purposes. The job pays about 30K a year and I was nervous that saying I have a Lexus IS 300 would make me look like I'm living outside my means. (My car is completely paid off, but that's not the point.) I took the out of acting like a dumb girl and saying, "A reliable gray one." Did I do the right thing?

There is no reason for that question in the interview if using your personal car is not required for the job. Perhaps the interviewer saw you drive up and was trying to make light conversation with you, but they did not do a good job of that I see. I am a manager and during the couse of an interview I like to talk about other things to break the tention. I would have worded the question different, like. I saw your car, really sharp, or really nice looking. I would have never let it sould like part of the interview.

Good luck getting the job. If you get the job, ask about the question. LOL

I would have asked about the relevancy of the quesiton to the position you were being interviewed for. Weird question. I think your answer was appropriate. I mean, what difference does it make?? If it comes up subsequently, tell them you were reflecting on the interview and in hindsight wondered why the type of car you drive was inquired after.

It is the job of an interviewer to see who and what the person in front of him is. He obtains this impression by asking questions.

Often it is not what you answer but how. Asking about a persons car (or any other unexpected topic) gives the interview a twist which allows the interviewer to see how you react. The answer is really irrelevant.

Some employers may hesitate to ffer you a job that'll barely pay for your gas....

I think they ask about transportation to make sure you have a way of getting to work everyday without issue.
Next time, you can simply state that the make /model of your vehicle is not the issue, but that you have a reliable method of transportation which will not cause me any problems getting to work each day on time.
I don't hink your answer was bad, but acting "dumb" isn't always the best approach.

If driving is not part of the position I would ask how this is job related.

Yes, you, did!!

What the ???

Your car is probably better than the interviewer, so keeping that under your hat was a smart move.
