That's maybe in order to release body odors. Body odors are very important in the animal world for creating certain results like marking territory or sexual arousal. Maybe in humans it's an ancient behavior, that we don't know about, and we also don't know too much about it's effects.

I don't know how women would 'flaunt' their armpits. This would entail some real contortionist-style moves and I think would prove challenging work (not to mention looking very silly. In my mind's eye I envision a lineup at the bank with one woman standing there, arms stretched out above her head - "flaunting" her armpits). Too wierd. Too uncomfortable. Too tiring.
"Why are they so sexy ?", you ask? I watched a talk-show this very afternoon about the subject of hair removal on adult women. "Brazillian waxes" and other self-imposed, extremely painful 'beautification' techniques. The answer appears to be because removing body hair makes women appear more like pre-pubescent little girls. Little girls are far less threatening to men than adult women are.
