which are really smarter, cats or dogs?

Question

I have been living in mistery with this question. Not that it matters, its just that everyone says cats are the smarter ones. Personally, i can't stand cats. They typically don't care wether you live or dye and they scratch with no mercey. But which is smarter? Going on a guess, i'd say they are about the same. What do you think?

I mean, if you are going to say that cats are smarter because they do whatever they want without listening to you, doesn't that just make them selfish?

I don't like cats at all. But In my opinion i thni kthey are both smart but a dog is smarter. Dog's can be trained to listen to your commands, play with you, help save lives, and they are used in the police force.
Cats just wal karound the house/ outside climbing stuff and dumping in a litterbox.
I've never seen or heard of a cat that is in the police force.

This may never be known but I put my money on cats.
I love all animals. I have a cat and a dog.
The dog is more loyal and obedient. The cat is more independent.
I believe cats are smarter because They have better survival skills and need less guidance. They seem to solve problems quicker than dogs and they have longer memories.
Cats are generally solitary hunters while dogs exist in packs. So dogs are socially intelligent while cats are tactically intelligent.

Also, I have seen many animal shows. I know people are going to credit dogs for all the tricks they learn. I agree this is a display of intelligence. I agree it is intelligence on some level.
I have seen tigers and lions perform, they roll over, jump through fire, all kind of stuff. However I have yet to see a wolf perform.

Cats have an IQ of about 23. Dogs, around 11 depending on the breed. Cats also are concerned about hygiene. The only other species that gives a damn whether they stink or not is the primates.. And I'm not going to say humans because some humans don't care whether they stink or not :)

Dogs are way smarter. I've had many cats and dogs in my life.

Dogs are smart enough to understand simple verbal commands.

And if you point at something,a dog will look in the direction that you point, a cat will just sit there and stare at your finger.

I feel that both are equally smart!! Cats can save lives, and be just as helpful as dogs......Plus they all have their own little personalities!!! Then you have dogs, that can sniff cops to where a missing child went too. And or to help find dead bodies.....also dogs that can detect a seizure, before the person even know's one's coming, to get them to a safe place.....And seeing eye dogs!! Cats have been known to jump all over the place, and behave eratically, when a house is slowly burning, to warn the families, and even do other things to warn families there is danger....So, I feel their both very intelligent creatures....And thank-God we all have or have had them as family pets!!! Smile!!!

Dogs are smarter- but which breeds etc also come into play.
The poodle is one the smartest animals on the planet.

Dogs would have to be. Think about it. Some dogs understand human orders. They guide the blind. They rescue people from dangerous situations. Dogs can do a lot of things.

Cats are really aliens that have invaded our planet and have tricked us into feeding and providing them with free medical care without insurance. They have come to free the dogs they feel we have enslaved but they are too amused by the dogs antics to actually set them free.
