I got a really great deal on a saddle on Ebay, but it is a half size smaller than what I should get. I am 5'3. According to my instructer and other websites, I should get a 16.5 inch saddle, but I bought a 16 inch.
Will it be ok? It is a close contact saddle. Made by Crosby.
For once in my life I wish I was shorter!
I really like it, so I hope it fits.

I don't have my own horse, I ride lesson horses. The tree size is medium. If it doesn't fit the horse I usually ride I will resell it. Don't medium trees fit most horses?

It should be okay. A half inch isn't that much different.

You should be ok in the saddle- it is all about comfort- whatever fits you and the horse better. I have a bigger butt and ride in a 17, my sister, a skinny pole, rides in a 15 on her narrow tree horse and a 16 on her medium tree horse.
The size has not much to do with your height and more to do with the size of your butt.
To make it even more confusing, a 16 in one brand may be a 15 or a 17 in another- they are not really standardized.

As for your medium tree- it will fit most horses, but not if you have a stockier built QH/paint/app etc. They will usually need a wide tree. Arabs, TBs usually, but not always, are a narrow tree. Warmblood are usually med to wide.
The good thing about most english saddles is that they will stretch, to a point, to fit your horse. The trees are a lot more flexible than on most western saddles.

I think the size depends more on how big your butt is. When you are sitting in the saddle place your fist behind your tailbone/back of your butt. If your fist hangs over the back of the saddle, it may be too small. I have a 16.5 but my butt is kinda big :) and I'm 5'5".

I don't own a horse, but I bought my own saddle--also a Crosby. Mine is also a medium tree and it is a bit wide for a medium. That's how Crosby makes them. If the saddle is too small for the horse, you have a problem. But if it is too big, you can fix that by adding more pads. I have a foam half pad that has extra padding at the withers to make a too wide saddle fit. Mine fits an Irish draught/TB cross perfectly. So far it hasn't been too small on any horse I have tried it on.

If the saddle doesn't work out for you, you won't have any problem reselling it. Lots of people are looking for Crosby's

You need to worry more about does the saddle fit the horse. I would never, ever buy a saddle that could not be checked for fitting the horse first.A saddle that doesn't fit a horse properly can be the start of many bad things. I really think there is nothing to worry about with the 1/2 inch for yourself but I would be real concerned with how it fit the horse. There are all sorts of things to consider. Tree width for one. What type of back does your horse have. What type of withers. You can't just buy a saddle and go put it on your horse. Have someone knowledgeable check it properly for fit. There are things in horse shopping catalogs to use for this purpose as well. The horses fit should always be your first consideration when buying a saddle.

usually abouta size either way doesn't matter. I am riding in a friend of mine's old saddle and she's a good 4 inches smaller than I am, and it was hers when she was my age.

Some saddles are sized bigger or smaller than the standard, so it might be a perfect fit.

Honestly, its all about comfort. If your rear hangs off the back, no go. A half size really shouldn't matter all that much.

Good luck!
