My fiance's parents were robbed over the weekend, and a piece of paper with her social security number was amongst things taken.

The first thing you can do is contact the social security office and put them on alert. Seriously!

The second is to give your financial institutions a heads up, and begin keeping record of all of your daily transactions and cross reference them with an online, telephone, or in person bank statement.

I heard that signing your name on checks should be done as initials or in a very unique way, so that your bank can easily determine the difference in endorsements.
Also not using your home address on your checks is said to help. Use a PO Box or work address instead.

You can also call the credit beauru and give them a heads up too. That way if anyone does successfully make a large purchase and destroy your credit. The credit folks will be on the same page you are.

Get rid of all of your credit cards. They actually do nothing for you except rob you with absorbatant interest rates.

The fewer accounts you have with your name on them and dollar value attached, the better off you are.

Also, move your unused money out of savings and into certificates. The less they can get at in accounts that allow activity, the less you lose.

These are the minimum measures that you should take to guard against people adding to your liabilities and taking away your assets.

Another minimum safeguard is to have 800 numbers for all your accounts handy and to watch your accounts constantly. Many of them you can watch from on line at least once or twice per week, including your bankcards.
