....would you be scared or excited?
By contact, I mean, the receipt of a message or something like that - not evidence of an imminent invasion.
I'd be soooooooo excited.

Zahbudar - well, yes, good point. To me the actual evidence that they existed at all would be enough to get me excited, even if we didn't understand the message. Don't forget, at present, we no evidence either way (well, I don't think so).

Then I could die happy! Even if they are monsters and come and get me, I don't care. Just as long as I know they exist and I wasn't crazy for believing that somewhere, out there, in that vast space, live other beings.

I personally would be absolutely scared to death that the politicians and mad military of this world would flock to outdo each other in not only wanting to take control, but, in the present world conflicts and upheavals, the many religious comunities would declare the aliens had come as their individual saviour and given the USA's known military paranoia on so called national and international security, and other's meglomanic lusts for world domination,if i were an alien, i'd steer well clear of this mad house of a planet.

Yes, anyone with imagination would be filled with wonderment and excitement.
However, I'm afraid that the Bush Administration would react in the same Neanderthal way that the immediately previous responder exemplifies. The illusory WMD claims would be replaced by a crash WED program --- offerred to Halliburton on a no-bid contract, of course --- no, not to mate with these other beings, but to develop Weapons of Extraterrestrials' Destruction.

Wow...that is pretty excited.
Yes I would be pretty excited also. It would show that we were not alone in the universe. Now, how are you going to know what they said in their first message? Do they speak Russian, English, Tagalog, Spanish, Portugese, Italian, or what? Do they
know how to read and write, or do they just think something?
How will Earth People understand that it will take years and years to get one single message back and forth to our Alien friends?

Sorry mate that cant ever happen.
Its not that aliens don't exist its more that fact that 75% of people in the world are religious and the bible doesn't say anything about God was bored after he created the world so he went off and made other worlds. I would be very excited if it did happen but I think that most people would be devastated as it would mostly disprove religion which would in turn destroy civilisation

Contact implies two way communications which means they were probably "local".
Advanced intelligences from beyond earth would probably find us interesting and would want to watch how we develop. Any motivation that would drive them to actually interfere by even a simple "hello" message might signal their willingness to completely upend human civilization. That would be scary.

I would absolutely be excited! Having contact made with aliens would be the change of history, but it may be the end of life as we know it. Having contact with aliens would be BIG!

There have been radio blips our best minds cant figure out after years of trying but if we did pick something up it would be thousands and thousands of years old and our reply would take the same amount of time. If there was still anybody on the line it would be the longest 'hello' in history
Unless they are knocking on our front door that is................

Who wouldn't be excited? The only thing that would suck is that it would probably take more than a lifetime before they would receive any response.
