Frank Morris and the Anglin brothers got off the rock undetected in 1962, but most likely drowned at sea. Their bodies were never discovered, only remnants of their life jackets. Some claim they made it to South America...a bounty is still out for them.

I think you can depend on efw for such questions, as I have found no fault with his answers so far. Check out Don Siegel's Escape from Alcatraz (1979), which clings pretty close to the truth.
Alcatraz was indeed closed about a year after that escape (or attempt) but the real reason -- okay emphasized by that escape/attempt -- was the cost of maintaining a prison in a marine atmosphere.

No. No one ever survived the actual attempt to escape from Alcatraz. Only ever did 3 men actually get out, but it was in rough waters and two bodies were found and it was impossible for the third to have swam to shore due to the waters.

Yes, 3 did. If you want to argue semantics then they may not have survived very long after the fact, but technically they did escape from the island.

I think one person did, that is all. Not really sure, I know a lot of beatings went on there, that is probably why the shut it down.
