Also, my furnace is probably 50 years old. I was told I need new ducting too. What kind of furnace would you recommend?

Over the counter the switch is likely between $75 to $200 based on the limited info here.

Professionally installed will probably run you $175 to $475.

Our 52 year old oil burner has seen it's share of spare parts over the years.

Gas would be a good choice, it has fewer moving parts to maintain. Oil isn't bad either. No doubt your ducting should be updated. At that age, it may no even have proper return ducting.

I found a combination fan limt on ebay that was going for $20 at the time I saw it. Usually the ducts that change are right there at your furnace. A typical furnace installation in the US can range from $1,800 to 3,200 depending on efficiency, ype of fuel etc. I have included Carrier's furnace site to get you started.
