There are several programs designed to help with this situation . H.U.D. , Farm Home , and Habitat for Humanity are available most anywhere . I would recommend checking with your local public assistance office for other alternatives and other local programs that may be available in your area .

You may want to try Habitat for Humanity. Another idea would be some of the local high schools or a trade school; often they have "projects" that are assigned to better teach by "hands on" situations. For example: at the Forman Center they may have the class build a house from top to bottom, because that is the trade the pupils signed up to learn. Hope this helps some.

check with your town zoning officer or building inspector. there are programs available to help maintain the housing stock of towns so they don't fall into disrepair. often these programs are in the form of no interest loans that don't have to be paid back until the house is sold or the ownership changes. the house of an 80 year old lady near me was redone this way. these loans are tied in with energy efficiency requirements, so they have certain things that must be replaced. you may end up having a lot more done than you thought you wanted to. good luck, hope this helps.

Try Habitat for humanity. Not only do they build new homes for those in need, they also have programs to assist people with home repairs.
