What I mean is connecting the modem to all of my computers (with the filter) and then accessing the internet that way. Is it possible without the service? I've heard from some people that it is, but I want to be sure.

If I need service, then can I use AOL dial-up service and then use the modem to speed it up?

you can hook up your computers to your modem/router..
but you'll still be needing the ISP to provide you with the service..

DSL uses the upper bandwith of a standard telephone line (the bandwidth not used by the analog telephone). In order for DSL to work, the line has to be "provisioned" (someone at the phone company has to flip a switch). Without that, all the modems in the world won't get you DSL speed.
The only way to get DSL speed for "free" is if the line has been provisioned accidentally, which does happen on occasion.

No. You can certainly hook all your computers to the modem, but you still need to connect the modem to a service.
