Sunspots are areas of the sun where convection is inhibited by magnetic field activity. They cause the area to remain cooler than the rest of the surface. Hence they appear as "dark spots" during safe observation of the sun. They are not really dark per se, just less bright than the surrounding areas due to being cooler.
