No real good reason other than style and personal preference. I have heard some of the guys in the shops say that if you get a bigger wheel, it helps improve the handling. I am not so sure that I agree with that. Personally I bought aftermarket wheels for my 12 year old car because the previous owner had a habit of running up on the curb on a regular basis. When I went to get new tires, the mechanic told me that he could not balance 3 of the wheels because they were bent. A new set of wheels from the local dealership would cost me $330 after remounting the tires and balancing them. The local custom shop sold me a set of wheels for $260 and did the mounting and balancing for free.

for looks, to have the car be more individual, and if changing to a lower profile, wider tire, car will corner better and stick to the road better
