A hiatal hernia is a common thing that many people have. Many kids are even born with it.

By itself, it does not cause those kinds of problems. However, what does cause a problem like that is known by many names. Heart Burn, Acid Reflux, and GERD are all common names.

The stomach physically is right below your heart, so when you have this type of problem, can be easily confused as a heart problem.

Try taking an over the counter antacid medication like Prilosec. 1 a day for a few weeks. See if the symptoms get better. If not, you will need to see a gastro-intestinal doctor to make sure your esophagus has not been damaged. If it has been damaged, you will need to take prescription medications to help solve that problem.

Yes. You need to talk to your doctor about ways to handle the pain. Have they discussed surgery? If it is a big one, you may need to go ahead a take care of it. Sometimes it can be managed with medication. Good Luck!
