It is a book club for high school students and we want to read classic books for college-bound kids. The three we have read already are "The Last of the Mohicans" by James Fennimore Cooper, "Summer" by Edith Wharton, and "Slaughterhouse Five" by Kurt Vonnegut Jr. I'd appreciate any suggestions or lists from other sources. Thanks!

Definately To Kill a Mockingbird - you'll all love it. Then, I'd suggest:
1984
Jane Eyre
Logan's Run
The Adventures of Huck Finn
The Scarlet Letter
The Red Badge of Courage
East of Eden
The Call of the Wild
A Farewell to Arms

Anna Karinnina (sp??) is amazing and a classic

The Count of Monte Cristo is also one of the best books i have ever read and a classic

Ask a teacher for a reading list they often only use a portion of a recommended reading list through the year...try to read some of the others that arent covered. also if you have an AP English teacher they could be a great resource. When i was in AP English we had a summer reading list that was pretty cool, they would probably have great recomendations.

Also sometimes you can find college syllubuses online...see if you can find a freshman english reading list...it woudl be a great way to get the jump on college. (you could also email the head of the English dept. at your local university i am sure they would love to help!)

They should read:
1984 by Orwell
Animal Farm by Orwell
Brave New Worlds by Huxley
Invisible Man by Ellison
Frankenstein by Shelley
The Canterbury Tales by Chaucer
Beowulf
Morte de Arthur by Mallory
Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, Cannery Row, all by Steinbeck
The Catcher in the Rye by Salinger
A Separate Peace by Knowles
Lord of the Flies by Golding
The Things They Carried by O'Brien
Any work by Twain
A Modest Proposal by ??? (He also wrote Gulliver's Travels but I'm drawing a blank)
You could also look for the Norton Critical Anthologies of American Lit, British Lit, World Lit, Poetry, really anything. They are a great resource for college bound kids.

That's what I'd say off the top of my head.

Any of Jane Austen's books will be good. Edith Wharton's House of Mirth is, I believe, her strongest novel. I didn't like "Summer" that much, the main character was just so weak.

Great Expectations by Charles Dickens would also be interesting for those going to college.

you do not should be shy asking for money. Your no longer doing any damage to donors and human beings do not ignore that colleges and charity agencies nonetheless want money to keep going. surprisingly in this economy! As for thoughts what about a skills coach that scholars placed on? Have community bands/comedians donate a at the same time as. Have a activities adventure with the students as against the instructors. A BBQ on the weekend at the same time as that's warmth we've scratch playing cards that are tremendous for school communities to improve money. You hand a card to someone who scratches off a dot which exhibits a donation quantity. They get a motivational quote, you get somewhat money. each and every card will improve $one hundred and fifteen so money would properly be raised instantly as well to even with fundraising campaign your doing. strong success with even with concept you bypass with.
