If you get a good magnification lens, say 10x - 20x, you will be able to have a good look at the stone. You will be able to eliminate most fakes by this process. A good fake, or a real diamond will require further investigation.

To be honest, if the fake looks like a real diamond to you under a 10x-20x magnification and it sparkles under a light like a real diamond, then it will make no difference to anyone except an expert. (unless you are actually going to use it for cutting glass or you are worried it may deteriorate over many years of constant wear and tear)

Scratch the stone along some glass - if it leaves a noticeable mark, it is probably a diamond.

Diamond is the hardest known substance so it will scratch anything. You can only scratch a diamond with another diamond. Try scratching your stone with a steel penknife to start with - if the stone scratches then it is not a diamond (but you will have a scratch on your stone!).

go to www.diamond.info and you can post your question to an expert. Plus I've always heard, not sure if it's true, that a true diamond will cut glass.
