Where can I look up the rules of hockey? I went to my first game the other night and have some questions!

I've never heard of it happening at the end of the 2nd period, but there are two different reasons I can think of..

1) A delayed penalty was called against the opposing team. When that happens, the goalie goes to the bench so the attacking team can get a 6th skater on, as play will be called once the penalized team touches the puck.

2) JUST to get that 6th attacker on the ice. That would seem a bit hasty at the end of the 2nd period, so I'm willing to guess that the first reason is the most likely.

2 Reasons:

1: A delayed penalty has been called, and therefore there is no reason for the goalie to be there, if the team being called for the penalty touches the puck, the play stops, so with the goalie on the bench an offensive player can take his place and try to score.

2: You might be mistaken on the period number. Late in the third period if the game is within 2 goals or less the team that is down will usually pull their goalie in desparation. Pulling the goalie adds an extra attacker, however if you turn over the puck youll need a miracle to prevent the other team from scoring.

I can't really think of anything else besides an injury to the goalie.

Most have already mentioned the "delayed penalty" situation that will happen at any point during a game. At the end of any period where there is only a second or two left, the coach will occasionally pull the goalie out to get the extra attacker on, especially with the face-off in the opposition end. I have seen this done at the end of the first and second periods - in fact, as a goalie myself, I have been pulled at the end of the first period in these circumstances. It's just a strategic play - a part of the game that will come up, but not all that often.

Usually a goalie will go to the bench at the end of a game if his team is losing and it is close. You can have 6 players on the ice, so if a team is desperate they'll bring on an extra attacker.

The only reason i can think of for a goalie to come off at the end of the second period is that there may have been a delayed penalty. When a penalty is called, the team it is called against has to touch the puck before play is stopped. This give the other team an opportunity to take their goalie out and play with six people trying to score instead of five.
It is impossible for the other team to score during a delayed penalty situation because as soon as they touch the puck, play stops.

In Hockey a player will pull their goalie to get a second skating player under two conditions:

A: In the last few minutes of the third quarter, if the team is losing, in order to try and score a goal.

B: If a delayed penalty is called (the ref will raise him arm indicating the delayed penalty, and play will not stop until the team that committed the penalty touches the puck). Since the other team basically can't score, a team will pull its goalie when a delayed penalty is called so they get a short advantage, although usually the advantage does not last very long.

I'm guessing that you saw B.

I think you have the answer now...re delayed penalty or extra attacker in a close game put at the end of the 3rd period. I just wanted to point out to A Priori that in a typical hockey game there are three periods...no quarters. Sorry to nit pick but Hockey is my life!

If theres a delayed penalty the goalie leaves to put an extra forward on the ice. On a delayed penalty the team that committed it has to touch it for the penalty to be called. They cant score on a delayed penalty.

Usually when there is a face off in the opposing zone with less time it would take to win a face off and shoot the puck down the length of the ice, a coach will take out his goaltender for that extra man to try and score right off the face off, before the end of the period.

Does no one ever read previous answers. Most of the time everyone repeats the same thing over and over. However all answers to the question apply: delayed penalty and an extra attacker.

on a delayed penalty the golie usually goes to the bench so his team can have a 6th skater untill the team who the penalty is on touches the puck or the play ends with an offside, an iceing ect. go to nhl.com for the new crappy rules or to uhl.com or iihhf.com for the international rules witch are much better because the nhl is for people who are to afraid to hit
