I think that the underwear is a leftover from the times, when soap and hot water were a scarcity.
The outer layers of clothing were laundered less frequently, as people only owned a couple of changes of clothing.
So I guess this was a way to be sanitary as well as well covered.
Then women stopped wearing corsets, so they needed a different way of supporting the bosom, hence the invention of bra.
Today the underwear is as much for show as it is functional. Imagine going to the store and trying on pants some other woman has just tried on without the barrier of panties. Gross!
Another reason might be shaping. There are a lot of undergarments now, capable of making body parts appear more attractive, lifting, separating, firming, diminishing. That's an obvious benefit.
And yet another reason may be a simple pleasure of wearing something pretty or sexy without anyone else knowing about it.
So whatever the reason - functional or not, we still do wear underwear mostly out of habit.

More comfortable for men and for women - just plain trashy!!!! You need to wear underwear to keep fluids from getting onto your pants or whatever you are wearing. Especially if you have a close friend or a little sister who borrows your clothes!! I'm sure she doesn't want your fluids passed to her - right??

You don't have to wear underwear if you don't want :-) Sometimes I hate it but I wear it because of hygienic reasons.

So our clothes don't get dirty on the inside. I'll put my outter clothes back on. I change my underwear every day. And my socks a couple of times a day.

because its more comfy(@ least for guys) and if grls get an early period, and plus we dont want no cortch shots, like Britney Spears and Paris Hilton!
