I filled an online application out for a well known furniture store. I have AWESOME qualifications for the position posted in my opinion - 5 years of retail management experience, over 7 years customer service experience. Anyhow, one of the prerequisites to apply are that you must be available to work every Saturday and Sunday. Well, I'm a christian and do not work Sundays. Therefore, I answered the question "no." I was directed to a page that told me I did not meet the requirements of the position. Is this not religious discrimination? I can't have that position because I can't work 1 day a week because my Lord tells me it's his declared day of rest?

They might just need the help on Sundays. I wouldn't make the claim that I was religious until asked why I can't work Sundays. Otherwise, it kind of leaves you wondering, kind of like now. They may just work mandatory weekends. I have never worked in a Furniture store before so I don't know a lot about Sunday working as far as that goes, but good luck to you on your quest.

I am sorry that you felt 'religiously discriminated against' because you said that you couldn't work every Saturday and Sunday, but since THAT was part of the position you were applying for, you should have NOTICED THAT and known you were NOT QUALIFIED for that position, because you won't work on Sunday. I'm a Christian, and I have 'worked' on many Sundays ... but I was a psychologist who 'cares' enough to know that not everyone has a 'crisis' only Monday through Saturday, and every Christian priest and minister I know also ALWAYS WORK ON SUNDAY, too ... and work ESPECIALLY HARD on Christmas and Easter, whether those fall on Sunday or not ... so trying to 'use religious discrimination' as your 'excuse' for not getting the job you wanted is simply WRONG ... and how do you know that the Lord told you that SUNDAY was his 'day of rest' ... because what is said in the Bible is not that 'SUNDAY' was the day, nor was any 'particular day of the week' but only that 'God created the world and all the creatures in it' in SIX DAYS, and that on the 'SEVENTH DAY' he rested ... and we actually celebrate the 'Christian Sabbath' on a SUNDAY (which is on most calendars the FIRST day of every week) because OUR LORD WAS CRUCIFIED ON A FRIDAY, and CAME BACK FROM THE DEAD 'three days later' and that was a SUNDAY. I suggest that you actually READ YOUR BIBLE a bit more carefully, and try being a 'good Christian' and look for a job that doesn't require you to work every WEEKEND.

Do you think tho' that your Lord would mind if you took a different day off instead? Either way you could go to the furniture you're applying at and ask them what their policies are on religious days are. That application may serve as the chain-if that's what the store is-and the local store may have slightly different regulations.

No it is not as if they bend the rules for you they would have to give Jews Friday Sundown, till Saturday sundown along with Seven Day Adventists and Muslims, as the that is the true Sabbath Some Christian sects changed it to Sunday...including mine. That is one reason it is illegal to ask about religion. It is none of their business what you do outside the store, but they are only worried about their hours of operations.

No they could care less about your religion. Their not there to please god they are there to make money....and if it means they need to have people working sundays to generate revenu then they can do that. I really don't think God care's if you work weekends lmao. If you don't like it go work at a Christian furniture store.
As much as you would like to believe it, America is not a Christian based country and their laws have nothing to do with religion.

that is common for jobs that produce the majority of their revenue on the weekends, if you applied at a restaurant they would tell you the same thing, it is what it is, but its not descrimination they arent hiring you based on your beliefs they arent hiring you based on the fact that you are not willing to work the required shifts.
