Hi, Jenny. Being a Texan, I do know a little about a cowboy's life... both past and present. Past... Ft. Worth , Texas, is known as " Cow Town" because at one time all cattle drives came to Ft Worth. That's where the auctions were. Those trail drives lasted weeks, with a trail boss and a cook, and twenty or thirty cowboys herding the cattle toward Ft. Worth during the day. These trail drivers came from all sections of the Southwest. At night, they stopped the herd and bedded down, Sometimes, because of weather, they could only make five miles in a day. Months... yes, months.. could pass before an actual bath. They would cross streams and clean off a little then but it wasn't a real bath. Lice was a big problem. Present Day... The George Ranch in Texas is one of many, many working ranches that employ cowboys. These cowboys ride cutting horses ( a good one cost around $26,000) , cattle still go to market in Texas because a lot of the beef in the USA still comes from Texas. Texas is known for oil, but cattle is a big commodity here. On these ranches, there are breeding experts and full time vets . Some cattle, like the Longhorns , are protected. But others are bred for sale at auctions... and the cowby make certain that each day and night those cattle are well cared for and protected from predators. At market, a steer can bring between $600-$800 each. Cattle and cowboys are big business in Texas!!! Jenny, I hope you can use some of this. And Jenny... this is not for your report... but cowboys are superior athletes and oh - so --hot !!!

cowboys led an almost impossible existance during most of their short lives. Those that didn't die from an injury suffered from herding cows, departed from disease. The old cowboys that survived are like an iceberg you only save 10% of the flock
