a histronic has a pathological need for attention. They have to have attention all the time, every waking moment. Being the center of attention usually involves friends and the attention doesn't have to happen all of the time.

Neither of these is really a "trait." Traits are inherent qualities, like being nice to people, liking animals, being good at math, etc. These are acquired behaviors. But to answer the question--people who have a lot of natural charisma are often the center of attention because people like them and want to be around them. They might also be attractive people, but that's not necessary. People who create "histrionics" are consciously misbehaving in order to have people pay attention to them, whereas they might not if they behaved differently.

There are lots of people who like being the centre of attention. Some of them may be viewed as "histrionic." But having a Histrionic Personality Disorder refers to individuals whose need for attention significantly interferes with their lives. Such individuals also have difficulty regulating their emotions, may be inappropriately seductive, shallow in their relationships, etc. So, wanting to be the centre of attention may be a feature of being Histrionic, but there are other features as well. These folks are usually unable to alter the patterns in their lives and their actions and behaviours usually cause them considerable difficulties.
