I think the greatest factor was the leadership ability of George Washington. He could keep the men together through great hardship. He could get along when funding was hard to get. He was a great tactician. He placed the cannons above Boston and drove the British out! He trusted his men. He let one young man go north to bring cannons from Fort Ticonderoga in the winter and it was astounding they could move them under those conditions. He kept an eye on the enemy and took advantage of their weaknesses. He was inspiring and a man of great character who was respected. He could have led an easier life but he chose to live almost like his men. Amazing!

the revolutionaries were naturally the ones who had left england because they were the creative, fiesty citizens who were the type of people who took action and took risks and worked hard rather that ate potato chips all day and watched tv. They were naturally ambitious and smart- so it was easy for them to defeat the sluggish, average,scared-to-do-anything-out-of-the-ordinary british. thats why.

I think it was the fact that we invented guerrilla warfare.Up until that time armies stood "toe-to-toe"and fought it out.Washington knew he couldn't win that way and started harassing the enemy with quick ambush type attacks. This infuriated the British who whined that we weren't fighting "fair".
