granny does yore dog bite?, no, chile, no. these lyrics from charlie daniels' the devil went down to georgia' are old fiddle tunes. and the fiddle answers the main theme of that tune.

Well, this is interesting, because I've asked myself the same question, except my curiosity is about the whole verse:
And he played Fire on the Mountain
Run boys, run
The devil's in the House of the Risin' Sun
Chicken in a bread pan pickin' out dough
Granny will your dog bite
No child, no
Now, does ANY of that make sense? What's the connection between all these apparently random phrases? Maybe Geezer (a few posts up) has the answer - they're just lines from other fiddle songs.

In the old days down south in the USA pioneers use to make their on bread from flour and yeast. The ladies would set the bread dough out on the porch in a bread pan under a cloth cover. Well chickens would try to sneak up on the porch and pull the cloth off the rising bread and crawl in and feast on the rising dough!

It is sort of like how cats jump up on the counter to get into the butter...only with a chicken for a pet..the lady went to answer the phone while making dough and next when she came back that is what she saw!!
Do you know why the chicken only crossed halfway across the road?? Well....because she wanted to lay it on the line.
Also could be a fiddling contest for money and it is not for much money..chicken feed...and the guy he is playing against is "from the house of the Rising Sun" (China). We see China and communism as the devil and the south is very patriotic (if you can do it , it isn't bragging...to beat the devil). Will the South ever have to send boys to war with China (granny will your dog bite?)...no, son,no...??? His granny is more mellow and wise with age...

As a consummate chicken picker and plucker (not to be confused with peckin with the chickens) from the Dakotas, peckin not pickin means you are fighting with the rest of the flock for the little that is offered you. Pickin refers to pulling the pin-feathers out of it's azz after you butcher and before you singe. If he tells you you'll soon be scratching with the hens, it's time to look for a new job. If you're looking for an interesting job that pays well, you should look at the info I sent Occulty on harvesting bull penises. The locals around here pay good money to watch city folk do stupid sh!t. You city folk crack me up. I met one the other day on the sub-way when I was commuting out to feed my cows that thought hamburger grew on trees, in shrink-wrapped white cello containers with a diaper.. RScott

uh, there's a chicken, in a bread pan, which still has dough on it, and it's picking at it.
