I replaced a heating unit 4 years ago and with instillation the costs were about 1,400.00. I had the duct work in place. I suggest you obtain 3 bids and check on the firms with the Better Business Bureau. If you are considering air conditioning, this is the time to do it. This is a good use for a home equity loan. Check out any tax credits you might receive for installing an energy efficient unit.

On retrofit job, I'd estimate the cost will be approximately $5 - 6,000 for material and labor. Plus you'll have to have an electrician and plumber to wire the units and provide a drain for the condensation drain. That'll run another $1 - 2,000.
