In the old days, women could use the lunar cycle to keep track of their periods. Families functioned differently then, too, with a combination of mulitple wives, daughters, and servant women living together, and when women live in close community, their cycles start to coincide (imagine a whole camp full of women PMSing!). This is why the moon is regarded as feminine and many goddesses are associated with it, while the sun, the moon's opposite, is regarded as masculine.

In today's world of birth control pills and disjointed families, women's cycles are all over the place. The best thing to do is to keep track on a regular, 12-month calendar and count up the days of your own, unique cycle.

Actually it does! Women cycle with the moon (you ovulate on the full moon- that is when you are at your most fertile) when they are in contact with it. What does that mean? It means that back when we slept under the stars a'naturale (outside), women ovulated with the moon. However, now that our lives are more indoors than out, and we do not sleep regularly under the stars, the moon and the cycle of women are no longer related. Sorry, it would be nice if it were (it would make the predicition a lot easier!)
