Hispanic is a name that was made up by the Govt. Latino is the more correct term. There's no difference, though.

Hispanics, those are children living in America but born from illegal immigrants
Latinos is what the majority of south and central America are called because there is so many of them to consider mentioning all the ethnicities

The word "Latino" is actually more of a West coast thing. People of central/south american origin, especially european settled spanish speaking regions, refer to themselves as Latino/a. The term is more widely used on the west coast of the united states whereas the term "Hispanic" is generally used on the east coast. "Hispanic" is a broader term that refers to people of central/south american or carribean (the regions settled by the spanish) origin . The term hispanic is also occasionally used to refer to people of Spanish origin but that is a misnomer because people from Spain are correctly referred to as Spaniards.

Tiracs69 is right, he deserves 10 points. Additionally I have to mention that there are Latin countries in Europe as Italy, Romania, France, Portugal and Spain. Their languages have their origins in Old Latin. They aren't recognised as Latinos in present day but, Yes, They are.

Spelling??
-----------------------
The term "Latino" refers loosely to any person having Hispanic or Latin American background and is often taken to be a synonym with "Hispanic". However, while official use of the term Hispanic has its origins in the Census Bureau in the 1970s, activists like MEChA, Crusade for Justice, Brown Berets, Black Berets, and the Young Lords often preferred the term Latino because they felt it is more inclusive of the broad range of peoples in Latin America.
---------------------------------

As used in the United States, Hispanic is one of several terms of ethnicity employed to categorize any person, of any racial background, of any country and of any religion who has at least one ancestor from the people of Spain or Spanish-speaking Latin America, whether or not the person has Spanish ancestry. It is therefore not a racial term, although as used in the United States it often carries racial connotations. The term was first adopted in the United States by the administration of Richard Nixon[1] and has since been used as a broad form of classification in the U.S. census, in local and federal employment, and numerous business market researches.

There is a huge difference! Hispanics consider themselves from Hispania (Espana = Spain). This means that they relate themselves with ancestors from Spain. Latinos are from South America who don't really derive themselves from Spain. They consider themselves their own race. It totally depends on the person what they consider themselves. Latinos are typically Cubans, Boricuas, Dominicanos, etc....
