Most importantly I would suggest you remove the hard drive itself or disassemble it (The metal box with about 20 wires going into it, the wires will be harnessed into one clip) and scratch the brown disk inside, this will make sure any important information that was once on it will not be accessible. In addition you might want to remove the cd drive or drives if they are above 30X speed you can scrap them for some suitable money. If the processor speed is above 700mhz I would remove the mother board as well, (The green sheet of circuitry) you can scrap it for some parts as well.

The most important thing is the RAM chips. They can often be used in many different makes and models of computers, and most "off the shelf" computers have extra slots for more RAM. They are the really skinny, long microchip boards that slip in the slots on the inside of your computer. Other than that, make sure you smash/destroy your old hard drive so nobody can steal your identity.

You should salvage the ram and the hard drives of your computer because ram is very expensive and it can add a significant speed boost to your new computer. An you should salvage the hard drive because it might have you credit card and social security numbers on it that people could salvage it even if you have reformatted it. Plus no harm getting more space in your new computer.

Take out all the RAM and the hard drive and the video card, if possible. Save the wires too, sometimes they come in handy for miscellaneous projects around the house and or garage.

Hard drive(s) most assuredly!!! Play Captain Destructo and enjoy! I did! I took mine to the garage, twisted it with pliers in the vise, banged it with a heavy sledge hammer, over and over, broke it into many pieces, and disposed in several locations. Items of Personally Identifiable Information may be secreted in various spots all over, with the danger, if you are in risk in any (say, credit) way, of identity theft. And, like you may have seen played out in places like some of the cop shows, there's not enough good software to guarantee a full erase.

to the poster above me... umm if you were to take the glass off of a monitor you would most likley end up in a hostpital for two reasons (1) your monitor is a vacum and if you were to take the glass off like you said it will implode then explode and (2) there is a very high voltage going threw wires even when your monitor has been off and unplugged for several hours
take your harddrive out and put a screw driver threw it so know one can get the information off of it

Take out the hard drive and smash it with a hammer. This will prevent anyone from reading any of your personal information.

The hard drive. That could always be useful next time.
Network card
Sound card
IDE cables
CD ROM
Burners
Of course, all this if you want to. These are all re-usable items you can put in your next computer.
