The point is that when you convert, you may get a fractional number, so you need to round up to the next can.

If each can weighs 0.37kg, and you want to know how many cans it will take to get a net weight of 1000kg, then you could just divide 1000 by 0.37. Unfortunately, this gives you a decimal (about 2702.702), so this means there's no exact number of cans that will add up to 1000kg. But 2,702 cans will give you 2702*0.37 = 999.74 kg. Adding one more will bring it up to 1,000.11 kg. So 2,703 cans is the smallest number that will contain at least 1000kg.

Notice that this number can change depending on what you're using for a conversion factor. 0.37kg/13 oz might be approximate and work well for small weights, but when you're dealing with things in the thousands you might find your numbers off if you were to try it in reality. For example, if you take 0.3685kg/13oz. as the conversion factor (which some sources would say is more accurate), the answer is 2,714 cans.

Good start! :-)

What if you had found that each can weighed 5 kg? How would you determine the smallest number of cans to package 1000 kg?

You would divide 1000kg by 5kg/can and get 200 cans.

for reading later----The units are VERY helpful in constructing the right operation to perform. (you have kg and kg/can, so you divide kg by kg/can to get cans!)

Sooooo in this problem...

1000kg/.3793 kg per can yields 2707.8 cans. since you can't have .8 of a can, you will have to use 2708 (round up to the nearest whole number)

Hope that helps!!!!
