They dressed as cheaply but as durably as they could. Canvas cloth trousers, which we call jeans today, weren't always blue. Boots were a must. Hats were also required. The polished appearance you see in the movies rarely happened, though. Cowboys were and are hard-working and tough. Their clothes needed to be that way too. Still, there was the good stuff for the special occassions.

I had an uncle that used to ranch, then ran a clothing store in his later years. He brought me along the day he was leading the procession into a major rodeo where he carried the flag. He put about ten minutes into spiffing up his saddle, almost an hour brushing up his favorite horse. Brushed up his boots a bit and put on a fresh pair of blue jeans, a western-fit shirt and his best hat. But that was only special occassions. When he was out on the ranch, the closest thing to shimmer and shine was when he smiled or had that twinkle in his eye that told what he had said was a teasing tale.

Some of the old museums from Texas to Arizona to Montana and above will give pictures of cowboys as they really were.

Do you have any horse ranches around. They are everywhere. And if you want to watch a working ranch on T.V. Watch "Cowboy U" on CMT Sunday nights. Watch city folks learn how to work on the farm. Good luck. Just FYI movies are not a very good idea. Go to the library and do some old fashioned research.
