Open your mind to all possibilities!
Those that believe in a God close their mind to everything but that God and its fantasy world! When a person discards those ideas they discard the limitations put on them by the religion!

interesting discussion. Umberto Eco was probably talking about the wrong idea of God; the limited one often imposed on us by religions. And there is a great harm in that. But there is also great benefit from religious writings, when they are viewed scientifically. They talk about principles and laws yet undiscovered by science; unfortunately, these writings became a subject of shallow worship and their true meaning is distorted. Some of the greatest scientific minds in the world like Einstein were very respectful with religions in terms of feeling that there are things out there bigger than what our humans minds can comprehend. Anyway, God (or Universal Intelligence) is a law, a principle that should be viewed scientifically. there are things in the world that exist and apply to us whether we believe in them or not, whether we know about them or not. We see the glimpses of the Universal Intelligence through some scientific discoveries and rules. In chemistry, if you mix one element with another element, you will come up with such and such substance. It will happen whether you like it or not, whether you believe in it or not; it is inevitable. So do the Universal Laws work; you may not understand them or be aware of them; these laws exist and work regardless of our knowledge. All we can do is keep our minds open, try believing that there are things out there that science has not yet discovered, and try studying and understanding them. So, believing in everything must be a good idea, if it means keeping your mind open and never dismissing anything without looking deeper into it. And while we do so, we will hopefully find meaning in life and reasons to live.

Umberto Eco is, of course, very versed in the culture of the Middle Ages and tends to see our own times as decadent.
What I think he means is that through those times, the idea of God, of an ultimate, focused the minds of people in one direction. It created a discipline for them and from that discipline, a varied and complex culture was born. So that although technology wasn't of much concern in the Middle Ages, philosophy and the arts were much more profoundly studied and required much more commitment to practice than today.
Once you take away that one idea, crowds tend to dictate the flavor of the day by popular opinion and in comparison, our world seems to have a short memory and is frivolous and vain as a result.
It is unfortunate that today's most boisterous religious figures have perpetrated this caricature of religion known as fundamentalism and that people are no longer aware of the true roots of their own culture in the west. This is what leads to such hostility.

Religion tends to disapprove of many things. Being brought up with certain beliefs as to what is wrong can lead people to be a bit more judgemental. Without looking as to what people do that doesn't follow religion, people can be more open minded, thus believeing in a variety of things.
Religion wil tell you: This is wrong. Without religion, you have to decide for yourself what is right or wrong by looking at both sides of the story.

do no longer make it greater durable than that's. Jesus mentioned you mandatory faith as a splash infant. And all you mandatory grew to become right into a mustard seed length of religion. only settle for that's actuality without searching for the emotional confirmation of it. you recognize our first maximum severe moments have been at delivery yet does anybody bear in ideas their thoughts from it? non secular delivery is only like it. that's like a doorway one passes from one perception right into a clean one. God needs a courting with you. once you first met your superb pal in existence it ought to or would possibly no longer have been emotional. yet one ingredient is for particular. You regular it. And that what faith in God is like. Accepting his actuality and his existence and his love. there's a scene in between the celeb Wars movies i think of "The Empire strikes lower back" and youthful Luke Skywalker is being knowledgeable by using Yoda the Jedi grasp a thank you to apply the rigidity. And Yoda tells Luke a thank you to experience the rigidity and Yoda says right here words. "there is not any "attempt". there is only "do". And once you have been a infant you probably did no longer attempt to have faith what you have been taught. you only regular it. Do you recognize that with a infant accepting this new suggestion in the 1st six years of his existence that he's doing the main studying in his existence. you notice what straightforward faith enables. It enables the impossible to be. sufficient mentioned. i'm hoping this helps. Take care.

Somebody said :"God is nothing". I think the meaning was No-thing, nor creature in particular. No thing known to us. But all of it and more. Ones that opened their hearts to God, like Tesla & Leibnitz, found their minds opened to great knowledge.

Zoel, you are very smart, if this were not so you would hve let pride prevent your asking this question. When one awakens to union with God in unconditional love within their heart they become aware that all things are one with God. As the colors of the rainbow are contained within sunlight, so to are we all contained within the light of Gods Love. "God dwells within you as you". Practice unity awareness. Everything is God. Everything is God. PS, questions are good, also give away what truth you know and it will turn and show you more.

Believing in one thing is restricting and false.
Without the blinders of religion, more is opened to the mind.
Information comes in without religious taint and color.

What is means to me is that they don't just automatically account God for everything, but instead try to find out things for themselves.
"Why is the sky blue?"
"What is the moon?"
"What is the sun?"
That's why we have science.
