What a great question.

In prime time comedy shows- like according to Jim, the men are always dumb and incompetent. The women are always smart and strong. Men are useless and fat- and that's funny. The women always have the real power. One of women's power is their sexuality- and the woman always win.
In shows like M.T.V. the gay male reigns supreme. Men are being taught that they need to care about how they look and what they wear. The metrosexual reigns supreme. Being a strong male is almost seen as a cultural evil. A man is supposed to be sensitive and care about how he dresses. Masculinity is almost a bad word.
This obviously affects the socialization of gender.

well theres alot of things that the media distorts but i think the portrayal of males and females isnt that off. there are tons of shows out there that give completely different views on things like gender roles. shows like nip/tuck and desperate housewives reveal different sides to relationships. as an adolescent who watches her share of tv shows i feel theyve shaped my views of gender socialization alot, in too many ways to write about now. its an interesting thing to contemplate though
