Can it be that our democratic views will kill us in the end? By trying so hard to be politically correct on every world issue, I think we may be destined to fall not unlike the Romans.

Todays thinking:
It's o.k. to do whatever you desire...everything can be solved by giving in to popular demand.....other countries problems are not our problems....we live in our own little world and whatever happens in other places won't effect us.....etc.

Good Point.

It was this exact thinking ("whatever happens in other places won't effect us") that allowed:

-The Nazi war machine to become so powerful
-The empire of japan to invade other countries
-Al qaeda to become so powerful and widespread

The other scary point ("everything can be solved by giving in to the popular demand") allows:

-The rise of dictators (Hitler, Hugo Chavez, Mao, Pol Pot, and stalin all resented "the rich" and killed and looted their possessions "for the good of the people")

It is good to see that someone is making an intelligent point on Yahoo questions.

Are you ready to jump off a building yet?
That's pretty lame thinking.
Are you totally unhappy living in the greatest nation built on democracy?
Rome was not a democracy. If it had been, it would have never fallen. The people of Rome no longer felt it was worth defending. The spirit that binds the USA, the ideal that all men are created equal, will never cease to be an ideal that people will stop defending.
In America, we are the masters of our fate.

I think that there are many things that are paving the road to the US imploding. Blind patriotism, every-man-for-himself attitudes, the hypocritical need for political correctness, narrow-mindedness hiding behind 'Good Christian Values', ignorance about world issues, hatred fuelling the partisan politics and an overwhelming addiction to hollywood 'stars'. Combine that with an arrogance that they are the Greatest Nation in the world, and you have Pandora's Box!

A very interesting question and problem. With all our freedoms here in America and general license to do just about anything (exaggerating here), it counters our mainly conservative religious attitude. It's this contradiction and hypocrisy which will be the seed which will bring us down.

But that won't be for a very long time, and hope I fall flat-on-my-face wrong.

Exactly.

It was the fall of Rome as well.

Lawlessness, everything goes mentality in the name of "freedom".

I dream of a traditional American as set up by our founding fathers. Based on hard work, family, country and patriotism.

Isn't it the ideal of a Democracy to determine its own fate?

one day, maybe
Remember, democracy never lasts long. It soon wastes, exhausts, and murders itself. There never was a democracy yet that did not commit suicide. – John Adams (1814)

Our liberties must be balanced by our responsibilities to prevent our demise.

Unfortunately, our youth seem to believe freedom is free. Will we become like Rome and not believe we are worth defending? Time will tell.
