Rivers are where ports were created because it was convenient for transit and trade. Much of the development occurs around these cities outwards.

Why is this in math Section?

Anyway, geographical factors play an immense role in the development of civilization. All humans need water and food for existence so any place with a good source of water and ferlie land will harbor civilizations.

A good example is the so-called Fertile Crescent- the area close to the Tigris and Euphrates rivers. The land is fertile also and this area gave rise to a lot of great civilizations like the Babylonians, the Medes, the Persians, etc.

Also the Nile valley. Although the outskirts of the valley is DESERT, the valley is so fertile to sustain the great Egyptian civilization. The Greeks and Romans have water all around them. The Chinese dynastic capitals are close to great rivers.

Note there are no great civilizations in great expanses of desert areas of the Mid Sharan desert or even in cold expanses of Antartica.
