products.. is that the ultimate aim? The whole thing just seems really bizarre to me... I understand that Indian people buy over 60% of skin lightening products such as Fair and Lovely so my question is a reasonable one...

Yes but no matter how white you look youwill still have the features typical of your race unless you then go and have plastic surgery.Michael Jackson is an example of this. His skin is white but he does not actually look like a white man to me.

Yes they are trying to be or look white. Most Indian people particuarly the women are desperate to be whiter skinned which is really bizarre as no matter how white they are they will still look Indian. It's pure self-loathing.
Indians use so many skin lightening products that it is mind boggling. What are they trying to achieve acceptance by white people? This is pretty strange as if they went to any Western country no Caucasian person would say "gosh your great as you have white skin". they would be regarded still as being an Indian person...
India people are one of the first to scream "racism" [e.g the Jade Goody incident] yet do not look to cleanup their own houses first. If you go to any other country whihc has beencolonised they do not have this same mentality.. ..i.e trying to look white to the extent Indian people do.
Personally I would never go to this country due to this element of their "culture".

In the Indian culture, light or fair skin is seen as being beautiful. So the women with the darker skin tend to try and lighten their skin. I, personally, think they have beautiful skin... the light and the dark.

You should read Laura Jefferson’s book "Skin Whitening At Home" ( I saw it's also available in electronic format +video: http://www.skinwhiteningathome.com ). After 8 weeks I managed to get my skin a few tones whiter and I also got rid of freckles.
The method she teaches in her book is natural, inexpensive, and is readily available in most homes. You could even find some ingredients in your own backyard. The most wonderful thing about the method she shares in her book is that it will help you whiten or lighten your skin pigmentations, freckles, age spots, acne marks, dark underarms, melasma, or your overall skin color easily and naturally without breaking your bank or producing dangerous side effects. Good Luck!

First of all.. MICHAEL JACKSON IS NOT AN INDIAN.
Secondly people all around the world who use skin lightening cream donot use it to hide their heritage but just to look better.
It's really silly to think that way. 2morrow you would say taht we take bath to hide our heritage just casue we wanna have a brighter skin. That's really funny..

Some use it to hide the hair that constantly grows on unwanted area. Some use it fade uneven skin tones and others use it for the very reason you mentioned..
