It could be the head gasket or bad oil rings. You really need someone to show you how to check the oil. There will be a dip stick that will show you the oil level and a different place with a screw on cap to add the oil. All cars are slightly differently arranged and you need to be able to recognize what your looking for so you are sure you have it right. A dip stick will have a small ring on the end of it just large enough to get your finger into or it will have a "T" shaped handle with some writing on it that will give it away. When you pull this out a long skinny and flat piece of metal will be attached and at the end of it will be two markings showing both "add" and "full". Be sure to use a paper towel to handle this so you won't get oil all over you. But you really need someone to show you. Try going to any auto parts store (NAPA, Advanced Auto Parts, Auto Zone, etc.) and ask one of the sales people in there - they almost always will be glad to help and are usually polite and friendly. They will also be able to show you where to add the oil and exactly what oil you need. And of course they will be able to sell you the oil if you need any.

lol, well if its "white" smoke it means your burning water in the combustion chamber... so its a blown head gasket or worse a cracked engine block... you need to take that in to get fixed asap.. but if its "blue or black" smoke then your burning oil which means you probably have a blown head gasket, cracked engine block, or blown piston rings.. still need to get that checked...
to change the oil you need to remove the oil plug at the bottom of the oil pan (under the engine) collect the oil in a recyclable container, screw the plug back on to the oil pan, now remove the oil fill cap, its on top of the valve cover, normally has a picture of a little oil can and then fill it up with however much oil your engine takes... check your owners manual and it should say there... under "capacities or engine specifications"
then your done!
ps im sorry to hear about your situation... its gonna be a pain. =)

It could also be that the piston rings are toast and its blowing burnt oil smoke out the exhaust pipe.
If it smells like oil burnt, then its not the head gasket. If the smoke smells sweet, then its the head gasket.

probably $1200-1800 to fix if it's something that's gone on for a long time. You really shouldn't drive around like that becasue it will cause more problems..
