May is correct, though Virginia and North Carolina also joined the Confederacy, but only after Lincoln had called on them for troops to suppress the "rebellion". Missouri and Kentucky are usually listed as Union states, but they were heavily divided, as really were Eastern Maryland, Southern Ohio and Indiana; and, on the other side, the Appalachian parts of Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee.
