The definition of gross margin in retail usually includes occupancy costs, which means that on average, retailers purchase merchandise at less than 60% of its average price (which includes markdowns). So you should go to the store, see how much similar items sell for, deduct 25% or so to account for markdowns, and divide the result by two or three.
