Everybody picks common topics like those. Your teacher has seen hundreds of papers on those topics. Also, they are HUGE topics - hundreds of books have been written on them
I suggest you pick something a bit less well known, something that interests you, something your teacher has not seen before. Here are a few to get you started:
Spies in the Civil War
The Great Missouri Earthquakes of 1811-1812

How Benjamin Frankin Changed the World
The Day The White House Burned
How the Automobile Changed America
Trail Ride - A Day in the Life of a Cowboy in the Old West
Dogs of War - The K-9 Corps in WW2
Here's another idea. Go to this day in history site http://www.history.com/tdih.do enter your birthday, and write about something which happened on that day in history.
The main thing is to pick a topic which interests you - something about which you would like to learn more.
Good Luck,

Well the holocaust was not part of AMERICAN history and the Titanic Was a British ship! One topic often overlooked is the role of women in the revolutionary days...or any other spcecific period, like the Civil War. There is quite a bit of research material avialable on important women in American history.

Washington speaking to the troops of the war of indepedence telling them the USA will not honor their word on benefits promised to them as VET's. They were thinging about couping the nation but Washington was able to safe the nation by speaking to them without his glasses he was nearly blind at that time and couldn't read his speech. He spoke and the words brought tears to the soilders eyes and there was no coup.
