Yes, DVD-RAM drives are fairly new and considered pretty high end as far as DVD drives, so it will most likely be able to read DVD+R's.
Hopefully you deauthorized iTunes on your old computer, or it's going to give you a hard time about transferring the music.

The easiest way is if you have the system restore disks that your computer came with. Other computers come with a system restore partition on the hard drive--you'd have to consult the product documentation to find that out. If you don't have system restore disks, try Sony's support site. You'll probably have to contact them, unfortunately, but maybe they can help you. At the least they might be able to send you some restore disks or a copy of the version of Windows that shipped with your system. On the side, don't get too many fancy ideas about reusing the copy to install Windows on another machine--these vendor copies of Windows are tied to the manufacturer's hardware and know when they've been installed on something else. Not that I think you'd do that, but it's good to know. But in answer to the last part of your question, YES, if your machine is still under warranty, Sony should definitely be able to help you with this, on one level or another. Contact them and see what they can do for you.

Of course your laptop will recognize it.
The DVD+R on your desktop is drive that will let you burn to a DVD disk
The 'R' signifies that it will be able to burn onto a DVD/CD.
The 'RW' means it will be able to re-burn (ie re-write) onto a DVD/CD using one disk. It looks for the last place burned and burn from that point on.
The 'ROM' means it is a "read only" drive, so you will be able to watch and read DVD disks (you don't have burning capabilities).
What you have on your laptop is a DVD-ROM, unlike the DVD-RAM you mentioned ;P

With the new computer you should be able to play any format of DVD.
Check out the Sony DRU-830A. Go to pricegrabber.com for cheapest price. It was $43 cheaper than circuit city at time. It is +/-RW, +/-R, RAM, 18x.
