I'm not even gonna start, because MTV always ruins my day when I get worked up about it. But I can say I sometimes prefer these rediculous shows over the music MTV would play otherwise. Especially the videos, as if the song isn't bad enough. And I'm sure after watching the same episode of the same pathetic show about 382472895797 times you can find something to laugh about. It really is quite entertaining, just in a very nauseating way that makes you question how the world got to be the way it is.

Easy, this generation is self-obsessed. The demographic of MTV these days are the upper-crust caucasians who don't care about music and would rather spend all day looking in a mirror. Thus, MTV provides a mirror, satisfying the aforementioned narcissists as well as garnering them ratings.
A lot of people forget that for their first few years, MTV did a service to a lot of good bands (mostly English ones) as they were making videos for the sake of art. MTV would play anything that they got as they were desperate for new content as not to be too redundant. It was only after the American labels realized that the video could be used as a commercial device that the majors started producing them in surplus (with higher budgets, at that), in effect making it harder for the less financially able independant labels to compete.

Becuase that's who watches MTV. Little popular high school girls who don't know how to act, dress, talk or think. MTV has given them a creative outlet. "Dress like this" or "look like this" or whatever. All people that watch MTV need something to identify with and it puts MTV in position to dictate what is popular. Unfortunately, it spills over into music (suprise, MTV actually has something to do with music) and therefore music suffers. Then major record labels see what's selling and they cater to that audience. So becuase of MTV we live in a world of Laguna Beach and Ashlee Simpson. Thanks Music Television.

If you combine "music" and "television" into one thing, you get disaster. MTV tries to bring what people want to TV, then accessorize it with what they call music. Rich white kids are paying for MTV and hanging out with the people who create the shows, and that's how they get on TV

Search me, brother! Though I think MTV chooses to capitalize on people whom people love to hate, like the rich white kids on these shows. Come to think of it, I think that American television in general does that; reality shows are a perfect example. They find the most annoying, deviant people to put on these shows, and then exploit them because Americans love to hate such people. And it keeps us watching, doesn't it?

Once upon a time, MTV did play music videos. We called it the 80's...

Amen! And it's not only rich white kids, but rich people, period. (My Supersweet Sixteen and Cribs come to mind). And while we're at it, if I see one more insipid overly scripted dating show on there, I will lose my mind! (Next, Exposed, Room Raiders...enough already!)
I think it's really all just a ploy to make you pay for MTV2, which actually shows music videos.

I'm with you. The only time they show anything different is on True Life or when they talk about where rappers grew up.

i agree if they should put more music on music telivision and cut down on reality shows or if that make a separate network for those filler shows.
