Very loosely. It's also a remake of the play from a few decades ago. While watching the movie, you'll be able to pick out lots of other different artists, too. Since it's supposed to be be fiction, they can't make it directly based on any particular person or group (as they put on the screen), but you'll notice Martha Reeves (who got into Motown by being the company's typist), Wilson Picket, James Brown, BB King, The Four Tops, The Jackson 5 and Marvin Gaye (with the "message songs.") I'm sure there were more artists in the movie, but those were the ones *I* recognized. Oh yeah, and Ray Charles' manager...the one who stole management from Ray's friend. Great movie!
