I have recently began renting a new house, and the lawn in the back yard was a jungle, with weeds about 3 feet high throughout. I weed wacked the entire yard, raked them up and then mowed it. The lawn consists of mostly weeds now, but there is still quite a bit of grass growing also. I am wondering what I can do to kill the weeds and not the grass, I believe that the grass is Kentucky Bluegrass if that helps. Me and my Wife are renting from a relative who gave us a deal(a REALLY GOOD deal!) and Im just trying to get the little things fixed to make it look better. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance

I am going through the same problem. There are a lot of good selective weed killers on the market (e.g., Round up), but they are just so expensive. I bought a weed removal tool from WalMart, it has a handle where a curved metal bit comes out and then forks on the end. I've been (slowly) getting them out one by one with this, 30 min intervals per day. Basically it pries them out from the root. This is working well for me, now I just have to wait for the grass to grow in the bald spots.

You can get a "weed and feed" fertilizer. It will kill most common lawn weeds but not your lawn. If you have that many weeds I don't know what you will end up with. Dirt and patchy grass. If it is a small area you would be better off removing everything and doing some soil prep and re-seed the area.

I would suggest putting out some pre-emergent in the spring with your fertalizer. This will help the weeds from multiplying. Then I would suggest putting some weed killer down in the fall before the first frost. In between you can spray for weeds, just make sure to keep on overseeding so that grass will take the weed's place, otherwise more weeds will just sprout up

My husband and I swear by Weed-n-Feed. Depending on how big your yard is, you might need a broadcaster. You can get both at Lowe's or Home Depot. Weed-n-Feed not only puts down a substance to kill the weeds, but it also fertilizes the grass to help it grow and spread out into a beautiful lawn
Good Luck!!!!!

Sounds like you have done a lot of work so far. If you really want to rid the lawn of weeds use Scott's Plus 2. Follow the instructions on bag. They also have the same product that can be attached to your garden hose. I have only used the granular product.
Over the past thirty years I've tried other products but find the Scotts brand to be superior.

There is something called a pre-emergent that you apply to your lawn when you see the very first signs of weeds starting to grow. It will kill the weed seeds as they are starting to sprout. Other products really don't work well. Depending on the weather where you live it may not be to late to apply it. Other than that the best thing to do is pull them until next spring when you can apply the pre-emergent.

Grass is monocot. Broad leaf plants are dicot. Obtain a broad leaf herbicide to kill the BROAD LEAF weeds that have overgrown your lawn. Also be aware that with the weed infestation you whacked, there are hundreds of thousands weed seeds just sitting there waiting. Apply a pre-emergence herbicide to kill the emerging weed seedlings or you will be in a battle that will to seem to never end.

Look for a weed-killing product on the shelf of your local hardware/landscape stores that has the chemical "2,4-D" in it. That's the safest and most effective chemical on the commercial market that'll wipe out your weeds but not your grass.
