There are lots around but the question you must ask yourself is how much value do you place on your computer and it's security.
While there are some pretty good free programs around, none of them are as powerful as the better ones that you need to pay money for. It really depends on what you will be doing with your computer.
But you must have a good anti-virus as well as anti-spyware.
A top anti-spyware program will cost you $20.

Spybot - Search & Destroy detects and removes spyware, a relatively new kind of threat not yet covered by common anti-virus applications. Spyware silently tracks your surfing behaviour to create a marketing profile for you that is transmitted without your knowledge to the compilers and sold to advertising companies. If you see new toolbars in your Internet Explorer that you haven't intentionally installed, if your browser crashes inexplicably, or if your home page has been "hijacked" (or changed without your knowledge), your computer is most probably infected with spyware. Even if you don't see the symptoms, your computer may be infected, because more and more spyware is emerging. Spybot-S&D is free, so there's no harm giving it a try to see if something has invaded your computer.

For good, free and recommended security programs, please go here
http://www.webuser.co.uk/forums/showflat.php/Cat/0/Number/219333/an/0/page/0#219333
I recommend AVG as an anti virus, although eTrust's 12 month free trial is excellent (I'm using it and am extremely impressed).
If you need other programs, go for Zone Alarm firewall, AVG anti spyware (formerly Ewido) and SpywareBlaster.
If you click on the names in that list I gave you and it will take you to the official download site.
Please ensure that you keep them all updated for full protection and check for any updates when you first download them.
